THE STUDENTS’ CHOIR OF ZHYTOMYR MUSIC PROFESSIONAL COLLEGE NAMED AFTER V. KOSENKO

The students’ choir of Zhytomyr Music Professional College named after V. Kosenko of Zhytomyr City Council is a well-known creative ensemble not only within Zhytomyr region, but also outside it.

The first archival mentions date back to 1930 when the choir was headed by a violinist by education Ya. Ostach. In 1933 choirmaster M. Dotsenko, a graduate of Kyiv Music and Drama Institute, became the head of the choir, later it was headed by S. Kaplun, O. Titov, M. Yenin. In 1984 O. Vatsek, a talented choirmaster, graduate of Odessa Conservatory, later Honored Artist of Ukraine, Honored Cultural Worker of Ukraine, headed the choir. In 1986 O. Vatsek founded a chapel choir “Oreia” on the basis of a students’ choir.

Since 1996 the premieres of world opera and cantata-oratorio classics have become a good tradition in Zhytomyr. The choir and symphony orchestra (headed by V. Kashperko) of the college in creative collaboration with soloists of the National Opera of Ukraine, National Philharmonic of Ukraine, Odessa Opera Theater performed concerts of the operas by P. Maskania “Rural honor (Silska chest)”, P. Chaikovskyi “Eugene Onegin”, K. Hliuk “Orpheus and Eurydice”, theatric cantatas by C. Orff “Carmina Burana”, Vivaldi “Gloria”. Yurii Minenko, the student of the department (now famous countertenor, laureate of various international competitions), debuted as a soloist in the cantata by C. Orff “Carmina Burana”.

In October 2014 a new stage in the history of the choir began, it was headed by Andrii Moroziuk, the graduate of the Department of choral conducting of Zhytomyr Music Professional College. Being the student and custodian of traditions of Pihrov School of Conducting, Andrii Moroziuk inherited professionalism and high demands to the performance from his teacher Hryhorii Lioznov, Honored Cultural Worker of Ukraine, professor, director of the students’ choir of the Department of choral conducting of Odessa National N. Nezhdanova Academy of Music. The repertoire of the ensemble includes the works of Ukrainian and world classics, sacred music, adaptations of Ukrainian folk songs, and contemporary music.

The students’ choir of the department is notable for high culture of performance, which is confirmed by its achievements:

2015 – a diploma of I degree at VI Regional festival-contest of choral music “Ave Maria”.

2016 – a letter of acknowledgement from all-Ukrainian society of Edvard Grieg for the premiere of unfinished opera “Olav Tryggvason” as part of I International festival of culture and art Grieg Fest in Zhytomyr.

April 2018 – diploma winner of II International festival of culture and art Grieg Fest.

May 2018 – laureate of I degree at All-Ukrainian festival-contest of choral art named after V. Pekara, city Rivne.

November 2018 – the Grand Prix at the All-Ukrainian creative festival-contest “We seek and grow the talents of Ukraine” in Zhytomyr.

December 2018 – I place at VIII All-Ukrainian choir contest named after M. Leontovych in Kyiv.

2019 – II place in nomination “Choirs of Music Educational Institutions” at the International festival of church music “Khainuvka (Hajnówka)” in city Białystok, Poland.

A vocal ensemble headed by A. Moroziuk operates on the basis of the choir.

Extreme kindness and high competence, intelligence and decency of the head of the students’ choir Andrii Moroziuk create cozy and at the same time creative working environment in the team.
